Guidelines for Citing or Reproducing Materials from Other Academic Societies

When reproducing a part of a scholarly journal or publication from another academic society, it is generally mandatory to obtain permission from the copyright holder. Even if the material is your own original work, if the copyright has been transferred, you must obtain permission from the new copyright holder (such as the society).

The Copyright Act, however, includes a provision for “quotation” in Article 32, which does not require the copyright holder’s permission. This is one of the “limitations on rights” provisions and is permitted only in specific, exceptional cases. How to Obtain Permission for Reproduction (Reprinting)

If you wish to reproduce content, you must obtain written permission for reproduction from the copyright holder of that work. If publishing rights have been established, permission from the publishing rights holder (usually the publisher) is also required. Please note that there are no unified rules for the specific procedures; therefore, please contact the academic society or publisher that holds the copyright to confirm their specific process and complete the necessary steps.
